Program Overview

Are you a pro at managing money with an added interest in stocks, bonds, investing and financial planning? Have you considered getting paid to help others manage their financial portfolios? The two-year Finance – Business program provides a concrete foundation in business as well as training in various areas of financial planning, investments, and life and health insurance. During the program you’ll have the opportunity to write the Canadian Investment Funds Course (CIFC)® exam to be eligible for mutual fund licensing, as well as the Canadian Securities Course (CSC)® exams to be eligible for a securities license. The requirements for each designation/certification listed are set by the granting body, not Durham College. In order to qualify for any of these designations/certifications, students need to follow and meet the required processes.

The Finance – Business program will provide students with the skills and training required to work in a variety of areas within financial services including, firms dealing with pension plans, scholarships, educational savings plans, and investments funds. In addition to a foundation in business, learning will be focused on a range of areas including, personal financial management, tax and retirement planning, investments and estate planning, with an emphasis on training in financial services. Graduates of this program will have skills such as financial analysis, planning and control.

You will learn how to:

  • Keep a simple set of books for small businesses using accounting concepts and practices
  • Understand the needs of clients in order to create relevant financial goals that are specific, measurable, actionable, realistic and time-sensitive
  • Examine other countries, businesses and individuals to observe how they tackle the problem of scarce resources in order to satisfy needs and wants
  • Efficiently use industry-standard money management software to perform transactions, keep track of sales and expenses and create financial reports.
  • Efficiently use retirement planning software to forecast retirement scenarios for different situations or clients.
  • Students may also be prepared to seek related licenses in finance.

  • Process and maintain financial records in compliance with relevant policies, procedures and regulations for individuals and/or organizations.
  • Prepare and present financial information in compliance with relevant legislation and regulations for individuals and/or organizations.
  • Generate financial reports for individuals and/or organizations by applying financial mathematics and statistics.
  • Contribute to the development and the implementation of a financial plan to meet individuals’ and/or organizations’ needs and objectives.
  • Contribute to the development and the implementation of marketing strategies to promote financial products and services and to enhance customer service.
  • Develop and implement strategies to establish and maintain professional networking and business relationships in the finance sector.
  • Analyse, within a Canadian context, the impact of economic variables, legislation, ethics, technology and the environment on individuals’ and/or organizations’ operations.
  • Develop and implement ongoing strategies for personal and professional development, highlighting ethics, values and standards in the finance sector.

Scholarships

Global Entrance Scholarship

Study in Canada at Durham College and receive up to $3,000 in an entrance scholarship when you begin a new program in September 2025, or January 2026.

*Scholarship amounts vary based on the duration of your study program.


How much will I receive for my entrance scholarship?

When you enroll in a new program at Durham College, you will be awarded an entrance scholarship. The scholarship value will depend on the duration of your studies.

  • One-year program: $1,500
  • Two-year program: $3,000 ($1,500 in year one, $1,500 in year two)
  • Three-year program: $3,000 ($1,500 in year one, $1,500 in year two)
  • Bachelor program: $3,000 ($1,500 in year one, $1,500 in year two).
  • Students applying for a Durham College bachelor program may also be eligible for the first-year Degree Entrance Scholarship, valued at between $500 to $3000.


Am I eligible?

You are eligible if you are an international applicant, whether inside or outside of Canada, applying for a full-time postsecondary program and confirm your offer of admission as soon as possible*.


You also qualify if you are an international student who:

  • Pays international tuition fees.
  • Is currently studying in Canada and interested in a second program.
  • Is obtaining or in the process of obtaining an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).
  • Is enrolled in an eligible English pathway program in Canada.
  • Is currently studying at Durham College and applying for a second program.

 

Is my program eligible?

  • Students enrolling in full-time postsecondary programs starting in September 2025, or January 2026 are eligible for the entrance scholarship.

How do I apply?

You automatically qualify for the entrance scholarship if you meet the eligibility criteria.

Here is what you need to do:

  • Confirm your offer of admission to a full-time program at Durham College as soon as possible*.
  • If you are applying within Canada, submit a valid study permit at the time of application.
  • Pay the minimum $2,700 tuition deposit to receive a PAL from Durham College.
  • Pay your fees by the to secure your spot

How do I receive the scholarship?

  • The entrance scholarship will be credited directly to your student account prior to October 15, 2025, for September 2025 recipients.
  • There is no cash equivalent or alternative for this scholarship.
  • To receive the scholarship, you must provide your Social Insurance Number (SIN) to the Durham College International Education Office after arriving in Canada.


Terms and Conditions: Scholarship Eligibility

  • Program Transfer Policy: Students who transfer programs prior to completing their initial program of study will forfeit eligibility for the second installment of their scholarship (if applicable).  
  • Academic Standing Requirement: To remain eligible for the second installment of their scholarship (if applicable), students must maintain good academic standing throughout their studies.
  • Enrollment Continuity Requirement: Students who take an unscheduled gap between semesters will not be eligible for the second installment of their scholarship (if applicable). 
  • Scholarship Stacking: The Global Entrance Scholarship may be combined with a Degree Entrance Award, subject to all applicable terms and conditions.


Degree Entrance Scholarship

All eligible applicants to a degree program, with a combined minimum, non-weighted average of 75 percent and higher, will be considered to receive a first-year entrance award:

  •  75% average – $500
  •  80% average – $1,500
  •  85% average – $2,000
  •  90% average – $3,000

Note: Any applicant who applies to a bachelor's degree is eligible for both scholarships, provided they meet the conditions above.



English Proficiency Entrance Scholarship

Eligibility

Students must:
  • Submit their application for admission and pay their fees by the deadline indicated on their offer letter.
  • Arrive in Canada and remain enrolled at Durham College past the 10th day of the semester.
Exemptions:
  • If a student withdraws from Semester 2 prior to the 10th day of the semester, the scholarship will be revoked and the money awarded will be subtracted from their refund.
  • If a student fails to register for Semester 2 classes prior to the 5th day of the semester, the scholarship will be revoked and the money awarded will be subtracted from their account.
To note:
  • Scholarships are awarded towards second semester fees and will be awarded prior to the deadline for the student’s second semester fee payment when possible, or before registration for semester 2 classes. There have been delays due to COVID-19, causing study permit approval delays.
  • If a student has paid their full year fees in total before receiving the scholarship money, refund cheques will be issued in the month following the start of each semester (October, February and June)

Academic Excellence Scholarships

Students who achieve academic excellence in their program of study may be awarded an in-course scholarship valued up to $1,000CAD. 14 International students were recipients in the 2016-2017 academic year. Recipients are invited to an awards ceremony to celebrate their achievements.


Application And Notification

Students do not need to directly apply for a scholarship. Durham College staff will assess each student based on the English scores and notify successful recipients via email.
