Program Overview

Linguistics is the scientific study of human language. The focus of research and teaching in the linguistics program at Western is on theoretical and applied linguistics, bringing together an inter-faculty group of researchers for a truly interdisciplinary approach to the discipline. Learn More

The inter-faculty Program in Linguistics allows Western students from any Faculty to study Linguistics either on its own or in combination with another subject.

First-year students should take Anthropology 1027A/B (Introduction to Linguistics) followed by Linguistics 1028B (Linguistics: Applications and Extensions) in order to be eligible for admission to either of the Linguistics modules. For students interested in Linguistics courses as engaging electives, Linguistics 1028A/B is not a prerequisite but is strongly recommended.

Students are also encouraged to register for a French and/or Spanish language course and to continue to at least French 1910 or Spanish 2200 level. This will enable you to take advantage of upper-year linguistics offerings taught in French and/or Spanish. Modules in French Language and Linguistics, as well as Spanish Language and Linguistics, can be combined with the Major or Minor in Linguistics.
