Program Overview

With this European Studies (Spanish Pathway) BA, you’ll learn about the politics and history of Spain while developing the language skills to really understand the nuance of this subject. You’ll spend a year studying abroad, where you’ll be taught and assessed in Spanish, and graduate as a Spanish speaker and an expert in European Studies.

Key benefits

  • Become a Spanish speaker even if you haven’t got any language experience, thanks to the ab-initio pathway.
  • Choose your curriculum and specialise in particular fields, such as Spanish politics, government and national identity.
  • Spend a year studying in Spain to develop your understanding of the country further.
  • Learn from a research-active, multi-national team of academics in a Department ranked 6th in the UK for Politics (The Guardian University Guide 2023).
  • Enjoy extracurricular activities such as guest lectures or the activities organised by the student-led European and International Studies King's Association (EISKA).
  • Benefit from the department’s unrivalled range of contacts with cultural institutes, libraries, international firms and government agencies.
  • Develop analytical and presentational skills valued by employers, opening up career opportunities in politics, diplomacy, administration, business and journalism.

Your first year of this European Studies (Spanish Pathway) degree will teach you about the making of modern Europe and give you an introduction to the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking worlds. You’ll start working on your Spanish skills immediately with modules that match your ability, including beginner’s lessons with the ab-initio pathway.

Your second year will see you build upon this knowledge by studying the integration of the European Union and learning about state and nation in Spain. In your third year of your European Studies (Spanish Pathway) BA, you’ll get the chance to immerse yourself in Spanish life by spending the year at the Autonomous University of Madrid. This is the best way to develop your language skills and understanding of Spanish culture and politics, as you’ll be taught and assessed in Spanish, by a Spanish higher education institution.

This course gives you the opportunity to choose your own syllabus and develop a specialism that really excites you. The long list of multidisciplinary modules covers politics, history, economics, linguistics, culture and more. This means you could be learning about Spain and Portugal under dictators or the causes of war one year, then studying microeconomics, how to understand Russia or post-colonial theory the next.
