This BA Film Studies course combines film theory, history, criticism and filmmaking to offer a well-rounded foundation for careers within the film industry, media, and the creative arts.

You’ll learn from academics whose expertise crosses genres and spans the globe. And since you’ll be joining one of the largest film studies departments in Europe, you’ll get to choose from a broad range of modules and shape your curriculum around your specific interests.

You’ll have the chance to learn about everything from the birth of silent cinema to the impact of AI and other new technologies on film and explore world cinema from across Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and beyond.

This film studies degree will give you a detailed knowledge and understanding of film and moving image media of all kinds, the societies that produce them, the technologies and techniques used to make them, and the responses and debates they give rise to.

This BA Film Studies is taught by some of the leading cinema experts at one of the largest film studies departments in Europe. With expertise that genuinely spans the globe, you’ll learn from academics who have published cutting-edge books on cinema and related media.

During your film studies degree, you’ll learn about film theory, history, criticism and filmmaking, which will equip you with the skills you need for a range of careers within the film and media industry.

When a module requires you to watch films, you’ll do so during collective weekly screenings. Equipped with 4k digital and 35mm celluloid projection, these screenings recreate the communal experience of engaging with movies in the cinema.

The first year of your Film Studies BA consists mostly of required modules. This programme will give you a broad understanding of the subject, starting with a module that will teach you how to critically analyse film. You’ll then discover how to put films within a wider context by considering the surrounding critical debates and developing your research and writing skills.
