International Foundation Year in Human Science and Humanities

The International Foundation Year in Human Science and Humanities is designed for international students who aspire to pursue undergraduate degrees in fields related to human sciences and humanities.

The foundation year is taught over two semesters and equips students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to succeed in their chosen degree programs. It can prepare you for studying degrees in behavioural sciences, such as psychology, education and criminology.

You will study core modules, which are general skills subjects, and specialised modules tailored to your chosen area of study - all of which are important for your academic development.

Perhaps you’re looking to go into a career in forensic psychology in the criminal justice system, or you’re just fascinated by psychology and crime. This undergraduate Psychology BSc (Hons) degree aims to give you a thorough grounding in both general psychology and criminal psychology, which could be applied to a wide range of situations and careers once you graduate.

On the undergraduate Psychology BSc (Hons) degree you’ll have the opportunity to explore some specialist areas like biopsychology, developmental psychology, personality and individual differences, and forensic psychology. We’ll help you gain an invaluable insight into what makes people behave the way they do and why they choose to take part in criminal activity.

Psychology is the science of mind and behaviour. We’ll give you the opportunity to explore how psychological theory relates to the actions people take in life. You'll look at criminal behaviour and weigh up the different theories about the causes of crime. From parenting to society, peer pressure and genetics, you’ll investigate the potential triggers and assess their importance. The aim is to give you some crucial insights into how psychology is used within the criminal justice system.

How will you learn?

  • Taking a hands-on approach you'll be encouraged to think and apply your knowledge, looking at how theories apply in the real world.
  • All our lecturers are focused on supporting you, and we have a dedicated Transition and Progression Tutor, who will help you adapt to studying Psychology at degree level.
  • Some of our final year optional modules are partly taught by professional clinical and forensic psychologists, giving you the opportunity to learn directly from those in professional practise.
  • Many of our lecturers are members of our Centre for Cognition and Neuroscience, and produce world-leading research in this field, ensuring you will be taught by some people at the cutting-edge of their discipline.
  • We’ll help you broaden your skills and experiences to make you attractive to potential employers in your chosen career. You’ll have the opportunity to build your communication skills, assertiveness, ability to work in teams and presentation techniques, all of which are useful in many careers and professions.

    Scholarships for your pathway programme and degree at Huddersfield:

    • In celebration of the ten year anniversary of the University of Huddersfield International Study Centre, we are pleased to offer a joint scholarship opportunity with the University of Huddersfield. The scholarship will provide you with up to £10,000 in funding over the course of your time at Huddersfield.

    How does it work?
    Scholarships of up to £4,000 are available for students studying a pathway programme at the International Study Centre. These scholarships are awarded to students based on merit and are subject to availability. For more information, please contact your local representative.

    Once you progress to the , the University then award scholarships of £2,000 each academic year to international students progressing from the International Study Centre. These scholarships apply to every year of your degree programme in the UK, except for placement years.

    Am I eligible for the joint scholarship?
    The scholarship is available to students studying the , and programmes at the International Study Centre. At the University, you must be studying either a BA, BSc, BEng, MA, MSc or MBA to be eligible for the scholarship.

    How do I get a scholarship?
    The joint scholarship is available for self-funded students at UK universities, paying .
    University scholarships are applied automatically on progression from the International Study Centre, with no application required.
