Program Overview

Weber State’s earth science teaching major offers students with a passion for geosciences and teaching the tools to become middle school or junior high school educators. The degree provides the foundational knowledge and integrates practical teaching experience in the classroom to develop effective teachers. Students graduate with a teaching license and Earth Science endorsement and can begin their careers immediately following graduation.

Dive into the Earth Sciences with opportunities to engage in active learning in the classroom, lab and outdoor field environments. Learn effective teaching practices and strategies to implement in the classroom based on current research. Gain practical experience in the classroom while supervised by active licensed teachers. Conduct an undergraduate geoscience research project under the supervision of a faculty member.

Participate in the Geology, Applied Environmental Geosciences, or the Sigma Gamma Epsilon (a geology honor society) clubs to connect with EST and other EES majors while exploring Utah’s local geology.

What You’ll LEARN at Weber

Earth science teaching majors learn geoscience concepts and classroom-management skills that prepare you to become passionate and effective science teachers.

You’ll also learn subjects like environmental geosciences, physical geology, meteorology, historical geology, oceanography and geomorphology.

  • Be able to collect data, apply algebraic and graphical techniques to analyze data, and interpret results. {Problem-Solving Skills}
  • Be able to clearly express geoscience concepts orally and in writing, present results from laboratory and field investigations, and effectively incorporate appropriate maps and graphs into presentations and reports. {Communication Skills}
  • Be proficient in the use of appropriate technologies - including basic computer skills (word processing, spread sheets), geospatial skills (GPS, accessing geospatial databases), and information technology (search, compile, and evaluate information from scientific literature and web resources). {Technology Skills}

    Scholarships are awarded based on merit. Available for students new to Weber State, transfer students and continuing students, scholarships are awarded based on criteria such as:

    • Academic performance
    • Activities or interests
    • Community service
    • International status
    • Academic departments
    • Unlike student loans, scholarships do not need to be repaid. Depending on the award, they may or may not be renewable.

    Students entering Weber State after high school graduation are automatically considered for academic scholarships based on their admissions application. Students interested in activity-based scholarships must apply for those separately.
